International Centre for Leadership Development Nigeria (ICLDNG) through her Shift Initiative joined millions of Internet users around the World to celebrate Safer Internet Day 2015 (#SID2015) in Nigeria at Aunty Ayo International School in Ikoyi Lagos State.
Safer Internet Day (SID) is jointly organized by Insafe/INHOPE network in February of each year to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially among children and young people across the world. The Safer Internet Day 2015 held on February 10 2015, with the theme “Let’s create a better internet together”, offering the opportunity to focus on both the creative and positive things that children and young people are doing online, as well as the role that we all play in helping to create a better internet.
To celebrate the day, Shift Initiative educated students about their role in the fight against cyber-crime. The Students from senior classes of the school (SS1-SS3) were empowered to make valuable use of the internet and mobile devices. They were exposed to understanding the risk and consequences associated with getting involved in cyber-crime activities and also how they as individuals can protect themselves online.
“Awobo Ibukunoluwa of S.S 2 said “I learnt that Cyber Bullying is not good, I also learnt about the consequences of getting involved in Cyber Crime and how people have been jailed as a result of cyber crime”.
Udoh Ruth said “It was nice and I wish the organizers can be coming every month”.
Nwawodu Princess suggested that “Cyber criminals should be punished and be at least educated in jail on how to use the computer positively and should be taught moral lessons”
To help make the internet a better place the students made promises that they will always be careful in using the internet and also post relevant messages and not to get involved in Cyber Crime.
The welcome note was taken by the school Principal Mr. Femi Agbede who gave the opening speech, first thanking the organizers of SID 2015, Mr. Femi stated that the topic is a very sensitive issue and it is very important for the students to listen very attentively, while Detective Paul Okoli from the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) took the key note address, and gave an interesting speech on the risk and consequences of getting involved in Cyber Crime. The event had a video on Cyber bullying virus, think before you post and dangers of Social Media for Teens, followed by a quiz section to test the student’s knowledge on internet safety, gifts from our supporter Google Nigeria was distributed to the students. The Office of the Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development in Alausa granted ICLDNG the approval to hold SID 2015 in Lagos.
